Characteristics of loquats

Loquats are the first stone fruits that usually appear in the year, since their season marks the beginning of spring. Although we are talking about a tropical fruit, its plant is one of the most adaptable in the world, so it can be grown almost anywhere on earth.

The loquat is a small yellowish orange fruit with a thin, smooth skin and is very easy to peel.. In terms of its pulpis fleshy and has a strong, characteristic aroma, which sweetens as the fruit ripens. Its bone is characteristic, as each loquat has about four stones inside, shaped like an elongated seed. The variety you can buy in Huerta de Pancha is the Golden Nugget loquat, a very common variety in the Axarquía area.

Other loquat varieties of Japanese origin are the Argelino, which has a yellowish colour and a more acid taste; the Tanaka is a sweeter and larger fruit than the rest; and the Peluche stands out for its elongated shape and less sweet taste than the others.

Our loquat plant crops

Loquat trees can reach between three and seven metres in height, and their cultivation must be carried out in autumn in subtropical climates, and in more tropical areas it can be carried out several times a year.

Our loquat plants stand out for their ramification. From a very low height, the trunk starts to drop branches. Asimismo, el tronco tiende a tener una rectitud muy pronunciada y en general la planta del níspero tiene unas raíces superficiales.

Its leaves are lanceolatecovered with hair and ranging in length from 15 to 20 centimetres. Once you have entered your reproductive period, it bears very small white flowers, which are grouped at the top of the branches and mostly bear fruit.

Harvesting loquat harvesting is carried out by hand, taking the fruit directly from the tree. For this, it is necessary to wait until optimum ripening point this is due to the fact that they are non-climacteric fruits, which means that they do not continue to ripen after harvesting.

The life expectancy of a loquat tree varies between thirty and fifty years.

Our loquats are harvested at their optimum point. The optimum harvesting point, in the case of loquats, coincides with the point of ripeness for consumption. In other words, they arrive ready to eat. For packaging, we use special cardboard baskets made of 100% recyclable cardboard. This prevents them from coming into contact with other fruit and being damaged during transport.

We always try to deliver our loquats fresh and with their authentic flavor. The skin of the loquat is delicate and may occasionally show small brown spots that do not mean that they are damaged or spoiled.

How to preserve loquats?

Loquat should not be exposed to direct sunlight as it spoils the fruit. Therefore, fruit should preferably be stored in a suitable place away from any heat source. If they are to be consumed in the short term, the pantry would be the ideal place as it offers a cool environment. We do not recommend keeping it in the refrigerator as the cold can alter its taste.

Another way to keep them longer is to turn them into jam. If the packaging process is followed correctly, it can last up to one year.

How to know if loquats are ripe?

To know if a loquat is ripe, it is essential to look at both the color and the feel. First of all, it should show an orange color; when a loquat is not ripe, it shows a more yellowish color. As for the feel, it should be soft but firm; the feel of a ripe loquat is similar to that of a peach, which should feel soft but if the finger sinks in, it is overripe.

Loquat has a sweet and sour taste. It is a very particular flavor, but you could say that it has a similar taste to apricot and plum.
